For Colored Girls

I actually had a friend tell me she didn't like this movie because she couldn't follow where it was going.  But as you know, I had to go check it out for myself. And here are my thoughts...

First off I will say, this movie is long - 2 hours. Has a great cast.  And is very emotional.

I was curious as to how Tyler Perry was going to turn a Broadway show into a movie.  I think he did a good job of portraying the characters backgrounds while keep the original script from the play.  Something I think is extremely hard to do.

You must realize going into this movie that this was a play.  A play where each character recited a monologue describing their life, situation, and hardships.  It's easy to get lost in the character's monologue, so you have to pay close attention to all the details in their life on screen.

As for the emotional part, I felt as if I didn't want to date ANYONE after watching this movie.  Some of the scenes are so troubling, that women were crying in the theatre.  I'm not talking a tear here or there...no I mean weeping and needing to blow their nose.  smileys

All in all, I am glad I saw it.  And I actually recommend it for black men to see.

I have heard of so many men calling black women bitter.  I think this sheds a light on some of the hardships black women have faced and overcome.   I wouldn't call them bitter, I would say they have been broken.  So I challenge the men to start mending the wounds inflicted by some of your brothers.

Paramornal Activity 2

This movie is like Poltergeist meets The Blair Witch Project.  Lots of waiting to see what is going to happen next.

If you get motion sickness easily, the 1st half of the movie may make you queasy.

It does help you follow along if you watched the 1st Paranormal Activity because some of the characters are the same and shows the connection between those characters.

Other than that, there are no happy endings and just like the Blair Witch Project...you are left wondering what happens next.

So if you are in the mood for some suspense, go check it out.  But you won't feel slighted if you wait for the DVD.

The Town

I can't say I was really excited to see this movie.  Matter of fact I only have one sentence to describe it.

It is just like the 1996 movie "Set It Off" featuring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett, but for men.

That pretty much describes it.  :)

Eat Pray Love

This movie is a great movie for those who are passionate about finding out what is important in life. I was trying to complete the book before the movie came out, but couldn't resist going to see Julia Roberts.

The book definitely offers more perspective into the main character's life.  I am not sure if movie watchers will understand the motives behind her actions...something the book does well since it is written in first person.

However, the movie does offer a visual for the words on the pages.  Especially, when it comes to the "Eat" portion of the title.  I wanted to buy a plane ticket to Italy the next day just to eat some of that spaghetti...it was almost like I could taste the marinara sauce, fresh gelato, and decadent Napoleon's dessert.

Needless to say, the eating part of her journey was the favorite for me. Even the part where Italians believe in the "il dolce far niente" which means "the sweetness of doing nothing."  A practice I am going to incorporate immediately...well after I complete this blog.

She then travels to India and Indonesia...three countries that begin with the letter "I"  - symbolic of this time in her life where she is focusing on herself.

There is a distinct mode that can be felt throughout the movie...calm and peace.  It is defintely a movie that I will purchase when it comes out on DVD.

So please go eat, pray, and love and see this movie.

Piranha 3D

This was definitely the replacement for the movie, Jaws.

Piranha offers viewers a very gory, suspense thriller.  Just like the movie series, Jaws, there are the unsuspecting college kids who are in the lake when the piranha attack.  Lot's of body parts being torn, a lot of blood, and the occasional gruesome effects similar to what you would see in the movie "Saw."

Definitely not a movie for kids, although I did see some in the theater.  Shame on you, parents!

And this is not a movie for the weak stomachs.

But if you can take all the blood and guts, this will offer a good thriller for the summer and make you think twice about taking any lake vacations.

Oh yeah, this looks like makings of a sequel.

The Other Guys

I love Will Farrell.  He is such a clown, but acts like he doesn't he is hillarious.

I just saw The Other Guys over the weekend.  Good silly comedy.  Great if you want a movie that isn't thought-provoking or serious.

This movie is about two cops who are far from the average, tough, beat'em up, police officers. They try to move up the ranks and gain more respect by being cracking more cases and being tough.  Of course you have Will Farrell playing the sensitive guy in touch with his emotions.

Word of advice...Do not try to make any sense of the character's actions.  Again, DO NOT TRY TO MAKE ANY SENSE OF THE CHARACTER'S ACTIONS. You will just be frustrated.  cool smileys

Good movie to get you out of the house.  If you are saving money, you can afford to save it until it comes out on dvd.

Dinner For Schmucks

Well, if you are wondering if Steve Carrell is playing another silly role...you would be right.

This movie will provide you with some laughs at the quirky behavior, however, there are times were you think, "okay, they went too far. This would never happen."

I am not opposed to silly comedies, but the movies today are missing something that was seen in movies like The Nutty Professor starring Jerry Lewis. Now thats a guy who knew the boundaries between comedy & just plain ridiculous...he rarely crossed the two, in my opinion.

Steve Carrell could learn a thing or two from Jerry Lewis, especially if this is the route his career in film is going.

I'm not going to say don't go see this movie, but I will say that you can wait until it hits DVD. :-)

SALT

Angelina Jolie's latest movie, Salt, is a must see.  It's like Charlie's Angels with espionage.

I will admit, this is a movie that will confuse you at first as to whose side Salt is really on....loyalty to the US or spy for the Russians.

The movie is very entertaining with lots of stunts, similar to what was seen in her movie, "Wanted."

It does appear, at the end, that the saga will continue for agent Evelyn Salt.

So go check it out and don't come out of theatre like I did, assuming that watching the movie has given me "butt kicking" ability by osmosis.

Inception

Is it really possible to insert my idea into your brain and make it your reality?

According to concept of "inception," it is possible...so let's see if I can make you go see this movie, love it, and tell all your friends.

You are getting very sleepy. Very sleepy.

You're not?

Okay, well it was worth a shot.  On to the review.

My views on the latest Leonardo Di Caprio movie is that you won't leave feeling disappointed in spending the 10 or 12 bucks at the movie theater.  The plot, script, and acting were great.  And who doesn't love a good intrigue?

Movies like these always make me wonder if this technology exists.   The idea of extracting information from a person's mind is common, but to be able to place an idea, the person didn't think of themselves, in their mind and have it shape their reality...WHOA!

I think effective marketers have known this concept for years. Put an organic sticker on it or a check mark on the side (Nike) and people will believe your product is superior.

I can't say this movie is superior to most but if you want a Matrix version of The Departed...you got it.

The Last Airbender

I just watched the new M. Night Shyamalan movie, The Last Airbender.

I have watched all of his movies and what I like about the director is that he does venture out of mainstream and give the audience something different.  However, I feel that his movies normally lack something.  You walk away thinking, "why didn't he make that ending better?" or "is that the end...really?"

I actually enjoyed this movie.  It was entertaining, had the action, plot, and great story.  It does leave you hanging in the end. BUT it eludes to a sequel, which I look forward to seeing where he can take this story on film.

So I guess Shyamalan has caught on...either that or he is tired of bad reviews.

Who knows? Maybe this can be his "Matrix" or "Lord of the Rings" triology claim to fame.

Danielle the Movie Critic

This is an introduction to my latest blog...a movie review blog.  I am always being told by my family, friends, and co-workers that I should be a movie critic.  I believe it is time to do just that.

So without further ado...welcome.
